Project K&N
I wanted to modify the intake for my 92 3.1L V6 Berreta to use a
K&N filter cone and get rid of my airbox, which, while being too
restrictive, was also damaged on the bottom. Note the damage in the
picture to the left, and the airbox opening on the picture to the right.
The original intake mod is here:
I have redesigned the system many times, which is totally
pointless, since no real gains are seen from a free flow intake without at
least a throttle overbore and preferable ported and polished intake.
The Filter:
American Racing Intimidator intake. Never heard of
them, but its huge and it fits the end of my 3" intake pipe perfectly.
The pipe:
I got a 3" exhaust pipe bent at Firehouse Mufflers in
Sacramento California (also where I get my exhaust work done). They
are friendly and reliable people and I haven't had any problems with their
work. I then bought a 3" rubber pipe junction from Home Depot and
cut a groove in it to make sure my throttle doesn't stick
Installation.
Installation onto the intake manifold was more difficult
than I thought it would be, the filter almost doesn't fit. Its a tight
squeeze but it works. High water is a major hazard now, but flooding
in this area doesn't seem to happen very often. This solution will
only be on for a year anyway, I have plans to go to forced induction next
year.
